Here There Be Dragons

Spoiler Alert. This flash fiction takes place after Betrayed (Farseen Chronicles Book 3), and before Revealed (Farseen Chronicles Book 4).

“Do you think we’ll shift?” Delton asked.

Breton stretched his neck but didn’t open his eyes, “We’re suppose to be meditating. It helps control the shift.”

Ode to a Camera

My Canon EOS Rebel T3 has served me well for many years. Among it’s many accomplishments, it recorded a breathtaking trip through the Canadian Rockies and a dream trip to Scotland. It has also recorded many gatherings of friends and family, as well as a host of other trips. Perhaps it’s proudest accomplishment has been recording the many hikes my daughter and I have taken over the past year. Many of these photos have been used to stir my imagination when writing. Boone Fork Trail

I hike, a lot. I find hiking, even neighborhood walks, to be a wonderful way to gather inspiration for writing. It’s also a much needed stretch after beating on a keyboard for hours. I tend to hit trails with big views or a destination. As a result, Boone Fork Trail – although nearby – never caught my interest.  Continue reading “Boone Fork Trail”

Fantasy Art, Book Covers, and Me

When I decided to publish my first fantasy series, I looked at the options and opted to do my own book covers. Why? Three reasons: Continue reading “Fantasy Art, Book Covers, and Me”

Chosen

This flash fiction is a small window into my new series, Finding Earth. There are no spoilers.

“Verify your score. Elite status to the green door.” The voice over the intercom was the same computer generated voice that had droned for all three days of testing.

Bleary eyed, Tiber’s finger shook as he provided his fingerprint and retina scan as verification. ELITE flashed on his screen. Eyes wide he checked his status again and moved toward the soldiers.

Roaming the Woods

Many writers (me included) eventually find our characters in the woods, usually running at top speed or lost off trail. In the southeastern USA, your character might be able to swing through the tree tops (using kudzu vines), but otherwise they would need to stay on trails to maintain a lope, trot, run, sprint, or canter. Heck, in many spots you would need a machete to amble away from the trail.

Poem of the Lesser Fae

Spoiler Alert. This conversation takes place after Deceived (Farseen Chronicles Book 1) and before Enthralled (Farseen Chronicles Book 2). This is background on some of the lesser fae.

*****

Sage sat in the sunroom watching Ryan and Tempe exercise their magic. Now that his new  powers had manifested Tempe had really upped his training schedule while Sage sat on the sidelines, again. This time it was because of the birthing bond. Holding a birthing bond never kept her sisters from honing their skills, but because she was young, it had been decided – for her – that she would focus only on the bond and shielding the house, if Tempe gave her that order. Seriously, she was sixteen and old enough to be holding a birthing bond. A little faith from her family would be nice.

Better An Angry Gorkong than a Sleeping Werewolf

In the Farseen Chronicles series, the fae bards sing songs of deeds, both heroic and foolish. This is one such song and contains no spoilers. It is the story of Tempest’s first kill, when she was around ten years old. When she was a child the world was a very dangerous place and everyone learned how to defend themselves early… or they died.

Running Through the Woods?

The Trail

Today I was hiking in my own back yard on a trail that provides mileage without driving. It’s keeps me in shape for carrying the camera and backpack on mountain hikes. It’s also quiet, except for birds, and the rustling of leaves and grasses. It’s rare I meet more than 1-2 people on this trail. I find hiking rejuvenating for both my spirit and mind, so when I return to my office the writing flows a little better. Nothing beats a 3-mile hike to clear out the cobwebs.
